Big or small ~ love them all.
Mom, I can’t wait to see what you will be dressed up as for Halloween this year! Can I be a witch or Dorothy from Oz? Are we going around the whole block this year? The words, “can I go by myself?” ~ are never spoken. I gently explain that this may need to be the last year we trick or treat. The disappointed face and the nodding yes, makes me sad. “Next year we can give out candy and not miss ANY of the costumes!” I explain. Mom! If we don’t trick or treat next year how will you get your favorite candy? I always save them for you…and she does.
Tonight when an older teen comes to your door with a big smile and a “trick or treat,” be kind. Embrace the fact that they are still being kids and having fun on Halloween. This year may be the last time that child may experience this tradition. Explaining to a child that doesn’t understand the “why not” when they are an “older teen“, is tricky, all in itself. The treat will be to see their excitement about their costume and the complete description you get of everyone else’s costume. Which house gave what candy and how dark it really was walking down the sidewalk. How scary some houses were and how loud it was outside tonight. How they didn’t trip or fall down, all the way to the end of the street!
Friends, please keep an open mind about the size or fears of your “treating” guests this year. It may be a big night for a big kid with a big heart and a younger mind. Smile, be patient and kind. You never know what size a person is inside.
Peace,
MamaC
