Church is not for me…

Church is not for me…

Have you ever thought to yourself that the biggest hypocrites call themselves christians? Hypocrite defined as “a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings.” Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

There are many people that avoid organized religion due to the percieved self righteous that attend. Friends and family are good hearted people, yet stay far away from church. Recently, I asked a wonderful, long time friend of mine, IF she believed in Christ’s death, resurrection and eternal life. She said that she did. My question was then, why no church? Did she not want to learn more about salvation and God’s word?

The night our son died, I believe God placed us at an event, within our church. He orchestrated all the people involved to support our family as we answered that phone call. When I think back on the events that evening, it was most certainly planned for the defense of death’s horror. Defense meaning the resisting attack and ensuing outcome to those loved ones, upon receiving such tragic news. Were we grateful for those placed in our life at that very moment? You can only imagine.

As time passes, people forget or may never truly understand what a great loss can entail. They forget that death to you, is as real today, as it was nearly 900 days past. Most people will never forget the overwhelming kindness shown to them during a time of loss and the months to follow.

Are there sinners in church? Absolutely! Thank goodness many sinners go to hear God’s word and receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion each week. Sometimes IT IS difficult to attend, as we all witness sinful people living life through the week, never showing love or understanding, yet stand in church singing on Sunday morning. Sometimes that sinner is us.  We are all here for a reason, for forgiveness and a new life in Christ, as we walk our earthly journey.

Maybe you say, good for you for going to church, but no thank you, it’s not for me! I understand. However, IF we had not been in God’s house receiving the phone call that would forever change our lives, I’m not sure how we would have gotten through that day or those to follow. Loss occurs in many ways and walking by faith can continue to lift you up. Pray for all people, as we are sinners, but do not let it keep you from hearing the word of God in a church family. Someday it may make all the difference in your life or those you love – eternally.

Peace & Blessings,
