Christmas joy…

Many things I do, I still do for him.  This new journey has been strange and I find myself quite different.  I used to be creeped out by cemeteries, now I find peace there.  Most people are in craft stores to create some fun.  I find myself in Michaels buying flowers and honoring things that Connor would love at his memorial site.  Weird, I know right?  Mistletoe he would love, a frosty hat with candy canes, lights and beautiful red flowers for those visiting.

Michelle McLaughlin, my forever friend’s memorial rests near our son.  My grandmother and two uncles are also nearby.  Yesterday, I walked through looking at the names on the stones and wondering about their stories.  I saw many that were recognized for military service, doctors and beloved family members.  I even noticed that a boy I went to school with was the nearest stone to my son’s.  I love thinking of all the lives touched by so many of these people.  It reminded me of the movie “date night” when the couple sits in the restaurant guessing all the stories behind the other guests.  Our lives are all stories. They all matter.  My son’s story, though short, was one with many lessons, love and humor.

If you were his age, your story is young and just beginning.  What an exciting time in life knowing you have endless adventure ahead of you!  I pray you remember each day to live intentionally.  Upon graduation from high school, I asked Connor what he would have done differently as a senior versus freshman.  He told me he would have gotten involved earlier.  He would have put himself out there, made a difference and joined others.  He was actually shy until about age 16.  He always had a sense of humor but only his family and close friends knew that.  As much as his Dad and I pushed him to try new sports, clubs, etc he was timid.  Many people do not want to try something new because they realize they are not good at it.  If you want to live a life that matters, don’t start when you think you are good; start today so you become good!  Do not let fear hold you back in having positive action in this world, just go for it!  One of mine and Connor’s favorite quotes:  “Be the change you want to see in the world.”  Mahatma Gandhi

As we approach Christmas, remember that the gift you give should be of yourself and not worrying about the “perfect gift” you can buy.  Give to those that do not have,  whether it be your time, prayers, voice, service or financial aid.  The perfect gift was born on Christmas day, nothing more, nothing less.  My favorite story is of Mary and her baby boy…May this Christmas season bring you love, joy and peace!  Enjoy creating your story…
