dop·pel·gäng·er
A friend of mine was at a class reunion in Florida recently, when the waiter suddenly photobombed her picture…she said he was bold and friendly. I do believe it may have put me into shock to see this young man, not my son, in person. The definition of the word doppelgänger has a general meaning of a look alike. I find it interesting that this weekend, one of Connor’s favorites, was when this photo was sent to me.
He loved Halloween and wore a costume every year no matter his age. Tonight we trick or treat in our neighborhood. We have a tradition at our house of witches brew chili, my recipe, 🙂 with family. The older “boys” hand out treats and judge costumes as the kids arrive. I’ve heard its quite entertaining on our front porch with the “fog” and music. Tomorrow night is the parade downtown with at least 100 floats and thousands of people watching. This year marks 20 as John emcees the parade for ECTV. It has always been a fun filled family weekend for us.
Halloween is short for All Hallows Eve, this is the evening before All Saints Day. This is a day for christians to honor the saints, martyrs of the faith and remember our loved ones passed on in faith, to eternal life. In the middle ages people carved ugly faces on gourds to keep the demons away, which they believed to be out in full force on Hallows Eve. They dressed up in costumes and masks to confuse the demons and lay error to their plots of evil. Today, our children dress up for fun in silly costumes to collect candy.
Many do not participate in this tradition as they see it for demons. The night that was to ward off the devil, has in some areas, turned into dark satanic celebrations. This is not how our family sees this night. We do not take sin, death and the devil lightly. We do know that the devil is a fallen angel hoping us to take to the “dark side” of life. Yet, Jesus defeated the devil by his death on the cross. He gives all of those who believe, eternal life through Him. Satan is not the all mighty and all knowing. His only hope would be to convince us that Jesus death on the cross is not enough to save us. We can live in confidence as Jesus reigns. Christ has risen, he has conquered death for us all. Start a Halloween tradition to look for the light and not dwell in the darkness. Jesus did not die to have Christians judge, but to lift up His name in glory.
Have fun, be safe, look up, and be happy this Halloweekend! MamaC
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:9
We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. Romans 15:1-2
